4 tips for researching on-line

I've noticed that even with all of the ways to find information, people still seem to have trouble finding information about things. I'm not sure why. If you get a bit intimidated by the vastness of the Internet then maybe these tips can help you through your next writing project.

1. Decide what you are researching. This may seem like a no-brainer, but I've noticed that there really are not a lot of people out there that realize they can not find information specific enough to what they need just by typing the broadest term into a search engine. Note that you should try the broad term too, to see what you find, but try more defined searches too.

2. Set a time limit. Don't spend three days researching a subject that only needed 30 minutes.

3. Scan pages, don't read. When you first set out, scan the pages for useful content and save the reading for later. If you read everything you find online you will spend three days reading.

4. Keep track of where you find things. By making a folder in your bookmarks/favorites folder then you can easily save pages that relate to your search and refer back to them as you write if you need to, or preferably as you edit.

This is by far not the most concise of lists, but it does cover what I have noticed are some points that many people seem to overlook when they ask me for help in looking something up.
