In this age of computers it can be easy to forget the basics - such as the proper way to mail a manuscript through the mail. It is something that most writers that were in the business before the 1990's had fully memorized, but now I have to wonder how many people can quote it without having to refer back to something that gives details.
First rule - refer to the publication's guidelines for writers. They will tell you how to format the printed manuscript and what they want mailed with it if anything.
Be sure that you include a SASE (remember them? Self addressed stamped envelope) so that your manuscript may be returned or it will be dropped in the round file (trash can).
Do not staple the pages. Use a paper clip or a binder clip - both available in any store that sells pens and paper.
Less than 4 pages: tri fold it.
More than 4 pages: mail it flat in a large envelope or manuscript box (available at most office supply stores)
Most important: DO NOT mail your original and only copy! Keep the original and keep it safe, you may not get the one you send out back even if you include a SASE with it.
