Humidity is something that no writer wants to have in their home, particularly not their office where they might have hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of books stored. Or how about having a pallet of books that you had self published sitting in a basement waiting to be sold only to find out they were ruined?

Thankfully I have never had that happen, but I have lost boxes that could fill a small home library of expensive writing books because of humidity causing the books to mildew.

Dehumidifiers are the writer's best friend when they are living in an area such as the Oregon or Washington coast, or anywhere that there is high humidity. The purpose of the dehumidifier is to condense moisture in the air by use of a cold surface, this air is then reheated to room temperature and released into the room. This way you are able to maintain a consistent room temperature, where with an air conditioner the air is sent back into the room as cooled air.

When you are shopping for a dehumidifier, you want to be sure that you check out the various dehumidifier features that are available, such as: auto shut off, wheels for ease of moving from room to room, and optional air filters for people with allergies.

If you plan to get a dehumidifier for your office, you might consider the option of a portable dehumidifier that can be moved into other rooms if needed or in case you change your mind on where your office is going to be in your home.
