Have you ever seen a paraglider? Those are them canopies of multi-colored material with adventurous men and women hanging underneath them that you see when you look up to the mountains in the summer. Wide parachutes that can not only go down on the air, but ascend on a proper updraft as well.
I was just thinking about my brother's addiction to paragliding and it got me to wondering about the use of such things in novels. Can't you just see a gnome tinkerer building this fantastical flying machine that allows him to soar with the dragons?
