Write a single sentence that describes the heart of your novel. This is what your novel is to be built around. For example, how could you break The Wizard of Oz down to one sentence? My effort:
A girl living in a dull gray world is whisked off to a dreamland of bright colors and interesting figures.
Leave out character names (unless they are pivotal to the plot, such as King Aurthur in A Connecticut Yankee in King Aurthur's Court). And keep it to one sentence. Imagine you have been asked to write the TV guide excerpt for the movie version of your novel, what is the most important element that readers have to see to be encouraged to watch that movie?
You have your sentence now? Happy with it? Print it out, or write it on something, and paste it to the wall or monitor or anywhere else you can see it all the time and use it to keep you on track as you work on your novel.
