E-mail overload

I am actually afraid to check my e-mail. I just realized, it has been since before the start of the year - shoot, before Christmas, since I last checked it. There could be millions of unread messages waiting to be downloaded. Can someone really drown under electronic e-mails? I wonder what would happen if I never checked it again?
