Heir on hold for another book

Okay, Heir is on the back burner once again, but this time it is for a reasonably good cause. I am still plugging away at it, but I have started trying to work on a novel with a friend of mine. I won't be saying much about it, but I am at least still working on my writing.

Writing on more than one novel at a time

I've got a good percent of Heir to Magic copied over into yWriter, but I have shifted my focus to another story for a brief time. There is a good reason for that, the other story works better at the point I am at in going back over the writing course I have been taking.

So, I am sort of pinging between the two novels at the moment, working on both of them as the muses shift their focus from just wanting to write, to working on the course work. It seems to be working so far, especially since I have kind of a gerbil mind that likes to shift focus at random points between one thing and another.

I'm not sure how many other writers work well when they are focusing on more than one novel at a time, but I think it would be interesting to look into as a study to see if some writers can function better when they are working on several novels or if the same group works better focusing on only one novel at a time.

Found old backup of Heir to Magic

Yes! I have found a thumb drive that has up to chapter 18 of Heir to Magic from 2006, which means I have only lost the work I did in 2007 and 2008, which means all the revisions and added chapters, but at least I am not starting over from scratch on the whole manuscript.

I will be working through the morning to get things moved from the backup in .wps files over to yWriter so I can work on the novel again.

Heir to Magic

Here's something I have not been able to do for a while - an update on Heir to Magic. ::wince:: I've been forced to restart my novel. It is an involuntary start brought on by a computer virus and the loss of the thumbdrive I had my backup copy on, so I have decided that I will work my way though my novel using Holly Lisle's How to Think Sideways course as a guide to help keep me on track so that I do not have the same problems I had before with the muses deciding that they wanted to follow random directions off course from the plot thread.

Mind you, I think I will still be keeping the scene where I toss a certain character over the side of the ship to force my lead character to behave, but me and the lead can negotiate on that as I work on the first half of the rewrite. For now, the tally for Heir to Magic is...

Heir to Magic update

At long last, I can make another update to my progress on Heir to Magic. I got to working on it the other night and have added roughly 500 to 1,000 words to it. No, bad me did not keep exact count. But I know it's somewhere in that range.

Heir to Magic virtual scrapbook

Today was spent working on one of my websites. I was stripping information off of one site to use on another one. As I close down a fantasy resource site that I no longer maintain, I moved the keepable information from it over to Heir to Magic so that I can use it as a groundwork in creating a virtual scrapbook on my work on the world of Heir to Magic. I intend for the scrapbook to be a place I can store my maps and the people and places in my novel. Once I have it all cleaned up I'll share a link to it.

Heir to Magic

I have added about 398 words to Heir to Magic - yay!  It has been so long since I had time to work on my novel, it feels really good to get a chance to work on it again.  I also just finished putting it into yWriter 4 and am working on getting the novel sorted out and in cleaned up so I can finish the rough draft version of it.  It is starting to look really good on my chances for getting the rough draft on this novel written this year, which is one of my resolutions.

Heir to Magic

I got a little work done on Heir to Magic a little while ago. A whole 66 words. Not much, but it's good.

I also lost the 17th and 18th chapters. =-o No idea where they went, they're just not where I thought I had left them. Very disheartening, but better than losing the whole novel.

Heir to Magic

I've added almost 200 words to my novel. Some of it was just defining a new part of the world, but it is still progress - right? I did write over 120 words of story material so that's good.

I am rather happy to be moving my office into the other room, because that is where the map I have been creating for my worlds is at. It will be nice to be able to sit and work with the map reminding me what is where and all that once again.

Heir to Magic

Oh, and speaking of novels - I got more write on Heir! yay!

It's not much, and it is still in my Alphasmart, but it's something at least. Prolly another 200 to 300 words, and not exactly a set scene. I wrote it up while I was sitting in line at the DMV waiting to license a trailer for my brother the other day.

I need to get my act together and start getting all that stuff organized in yWriter so I can see just what I have done and what needs doing still. Time to get the laptop set up and move the files over here.

Look, I got work done on Heir-- or its sequel at least

I downloaded the latest yWriter program from Spacejock.com last night. My friend needed it for her new computer and I looked up the site for her, then she pointed out to me that he has updated the program so, since I had not yet loaded it onto this computer, I downloaded the new version.

This of course got me to writing. I love new toys and can't resist playing with them. lol The thing got me to start up the sequel to Heir to Magic and I am now almost 100 words into it. Yes, I am still on chapter 18 of Heir to Magic.

Heir to Magic

Oh look! I have Heir To Magic still lurking around here somewhere. :::pounds head on desk:: I really need to get back to work on this story. It has been a long time since I got anything done on it and if I don't get back to work on it soon I am going to loose the muses entirely. ::sigh::

Office supplies

Well, it's that time of year again. When I go to Wal Mart and walk out with fifty to a hundred spiral bound notebooks at a time. Yes, school is about to start and Wal Mart has 70 page spiral bound notebooks in stock for ten cents apiece. These just happen to be the same notebooks that are the perfect size for writing a article or short story draft in. Or outlining chapters in novels. I got me some wide ruled notebooks as well as college ruled ones, usually I just get college ruled, but I want to use the wide ruled ones to start outlining on a chapter by chapter basis what I want to happen in my next novel after I finish with Heir, and I have about 10 chapters to go in Heir as well.

Road tripping in Alaska

We took off on Friday to take my dad for a drive, headed off down to the Kenai Peninsula sight-seeing. Our plan had been to go down, spend a night in a motel and come back home. That turned out to be spending two nights, no motels and total chaotic adventure but it was all around fun and a memorable trip.

We saw a few bears and a couple of moose and lots of fishermen after the salmon along the rivers. I got pictures of one of the bears, a momma and her twin cubs, but the other bear was a little black that was racing across the road way too fast to get a picture of him. I may have got pictures of the moose too, she was a momma with a little bitty almost wobbly legged calf, but they stepped into the tall underbrush and brambles before we got the cameras, and it was dusk, so I don't think any of the pictures of them came out. I'll see what I have worth sharing and share some pictures later today.

I did get a bunch of writing done on the little Alphasmart I got, including a lot of stuff added to Heir to Magic that I need to get entered into the computer later.

Writing Challenge: POV

Since it has been a while since I have got out a writing challenge, here's a challenge for you. Try changing your point of view. If you like to write from third person try omnipotent or first person points of view.

It is good to stretch out every once in a while and try a new point of view, since it keeps you from sinking into a rut that has you feeling tired of writing. Give yourself a challenge and see if you can stick with it.

I like to have the ability to let all of the characters have a say in the story, which makes it hard when I do like I am now and try to write a story from a single point of view. I'm trying that with Heir to Magic and Shadowlord's Gambit, although I have decided they are too expansive to cover from just one character so I will be switching back to multiple viewpoints on them.

I have another idea that I'm not ready at the moment to talk too much about that is perfect for just one character's POV. That one is going to start out from just the lead character's POV and stay there.

Neglecting novels

I was sitting here idly toying with things last night and realized that I have not had the time in far too long to work on my novels. I'm getting a lot of writing done, but it's all for work and a little for play with non on my novels. ::pouts:: I want to get back to my novels.

I'm going to be setting aside some time as soon as I get the cable for my Alphasmart so that I can work on my novel on it. I'll just go out in the garden for a few hours a day and type away on the Alphasmart and get everything written on the novel with no worries about what I need to be researching or doing or anything else. I think it'd be a good rest and recharge experience for me and let me get in half an hour to an hour work on my novel every day.

Now as long as the cable will work good for my little Alphasmart - which needs a name so I stop having to type in Alphasmart all the time lol. Will name it after I am sure it'll work good for noveling.

I have the muses, I just don't have the time

I was just looking here, it has been far too long since I have worked on Heir to Magic, or the Shadowlord's Gambit, or any of my novels. ::sigh:: I'm so bad about not working on them. At least I am neglecting them for the most part because I am working on writing projects that pay me, huh? That's better than schlepping them off because I don't have muses to write. I have the muses, I just don't seem to have the time. I hate that.

I'm getting an Alphasmart from a fellow off eBay here in a few days though, so with that I can toss it into the backpack and leave it there and work wherever I want to. Sitting in the car on drives or out at the fishing hole. I'll have to test if I can change batteries without losing the stuff that is in it. That would be bad if it did that, but as long as it keeps information good and can upload to my computer without any trouble I will be good to go and ready to write from the back of my ATV if I want to.

Now i just have to find more hours in the day. Wonder if I can trim down that excessive 3 to 4 hours of sleep I get at night?

Figured it was about time I did an update on Heir to Magic again - I've been working on maps for it, getting them in order and laying out character cards to establish just what each one looks like and how they're connected etc.

Dwarven Mine Pony

I picked up another little horse figurine when I was in town, I have a small collection of selected horse figures that I use to represent the different breeds of horses that can be found in my fantasy worlds.

The one that I picked up a couple days ago is a cute little fellow that looks sort of like a Clydesdale but he's got a larger muzzle than I think a Clydesdale is supposed to have. He looks short and stocky too, so he has become a mine pony for the dwarven miners. I'll need to design and build him a little harness and cart that would look right, but then I will forever have myself a visual reminder of just what the mine ponies used by the dwarves in the Goldheart mountains are like.

I tried to get a picture of him, but it's dark right now and my little camera I am using don't have a flash on it, so I can't. I'll get one tomorrow to show you what the little pony looks like.

Have notebook will travel

I have a notebook folder deal that I have been packing around to work on my novels in, a binder deal that holds a 5 subject notebook and a legal pad, couple of pens and has room for a small 3x5 inch notebook and stuff. It's great and makes for a good portable office. Yesterday I managed to add in an additional page and a half of written material for Heir to Magic and have outlines for another novel idea that is percolating.
