Writer's Digest went Bi-Monthly?

Much sadness. I suppose I'm more ensnared than I had realized in my efforts to keep my head above the surface of the tide of life that is trying to pull me down. It was not until I sat and eagerly paged through the issue of Writer's Digest that had come as I was on vacation that I realized why I seemed to have missed it a few months. To be precise it was upon seeing the Year 2006 Index of Articles.

My first thought was to be happy that they had indexed the articles. Then I hessitated and wondered what they would do for December's articles. I realized then that logically I should be holding October's issue in my hands so I investigated the cover. November/December 2006.

No! Bi-monthly? My magazine that I cherish getting each month, my MUSE, was going bi-monthly. I whimpered. I mourned. I tried to convince myself it was a typo or only for that month. It was 11 issues a year and holidays meant condensing November and December into one issue.

A subscription card fluttered to the floor and I picked it up.

6 issues for just $25.96!

Wait - I was getting half as much and still paying the same price per year? That's not right. I can't justify the expense of over $4 per issue when I did not have the money to subscribe to it as a monthly magazine.

So now I face a tough decision. Can I afford such an expensive subscription to a magazine that while I read it cover to cover does not really have anything in it I either didn't already know or can get on the Internet for free?

It is a very hard decision. I've been a loyal reader of Writer's Digest for years and a subscriber when I could afford it. I even have a collection of back issued that date as far as 1966 and are in acid free sleeves in binders sorted by year.

How can I not collect it and read it? But how do I justify the expense?

Such a painful choice. And only one month in which to make my decision before my subscription expires.
