I have some 3x5 index cards that I have been jotting down random muses on as I get them. The cards are filed away in one of the drawers on my old library card-file cabinet so that I can one day sort through them and find the muses again and come up with something for a story or article when I need it.
By jotting things on a 3x5 card I can limit how much detail I get into allowing me to later on build the story or article as I see best at that time rather than have half thought ot ideas to work from and likely get caught up in so the story would never take on a life of its own. Which is very important in writing. If your characters are not telling you that you are telling the story wrong, then you are telling the story wrong - or you are telling the wrong story.
