I like to consider myself computer savvy, but I admit I am often stopped short by the file extensions. What do they all mean? We have doc, mds, mpg, jpg, png, swf.... the list goes forever on. Or at least it seems to. And what do you do with all of those things?
Now someone has created a site that is dedicated to explaining these cryptic file extensions. The File Extension Library will help you sort out what a file extension is.
Lets take for example one of the ones I often get annoyed at seeing, the rar extension. Following the link we find that a rar file is an archive that contains compressed folders or files. We also learn that the compression is better than with zip files and the ability to compile several files into one download rather than have multiple downloads.
Makes more sense to me why the rar extension is so popular, so I guess I should get used to it and maybe consider using rar for my own file compressions in the future.
There are a lot more extensions explained in the library, over 1,000, so check it out and see if they can explain some of those cryptic extensions you have wondered about.
