I think I've been doing it wrong

I'm doing good on the novel that I am working on, the rough draft is at an estimate of just about 1,500 words shy of being a finished rough draft. So now I get to finish it off - hopefully this weekend - then relax and work to flesh it out into a full novel. I'm not in a hurry on it, since it is not something I am ready to look for a publisher for yet, so it has been a relaxed piece to work on at my leisure. Which leaves me highly suspicious that I've been doing it wrong on the other stuff I have tried to write.

I always start out with a while plot, then in an effort to make each chapter meet the word count before I move to the next I end up losing the plot I had underneath changes as I am working. I need to stop worrying about how long a chapter is and just write the basics of what is needed in a chapter and return to fill it out after the rough draft has been completed. So, I am going to grab one of the novels I have worked myself to a standstill in and try getting the story outlined in a bare minimal words needed rough draft - see what that gets me.
