Life had kicked me about a bit, but I am back now and will be getting back to writing and getting this blog back up and being posted to. To kick it off I am going to work on a bit of a writing challenge. What could one create with the writing prompt A fire argues?
__________________________
"You will burn."
The apprentice stood, eyes focused on the brazier and the flicker of low flame that burned within it. The fire seemed to laugh before it ducked down into the low coals and hid. Curses in several archaic languages followed as she apprentice cursed the elemental origins of the flame that refused to kindle. There was nothing that could be done about it, though. What could be done? Apprentices were simply helpless to do anything about it when a fire argues against being properly lit, even without the use of magic.

Okay, not much, but the best I could come up with to work in the phrase 'a fire argues', and I'm tired to it sort of lost the tense there in favor of finishing the exercise.

I sometimes find that when I get my hands on a new program it prompts my muses to start giving me something to say so I can test it out. So, here ya go. Find something new to toy with, whether it is a demo version of a program you are thinking about buying or a freeware program or something from the Open Source market - shoot, even something you might have programmed yourself and want to test out.
Just something new and interesting that you want to toy with and let the muses come out and check it out. See what they give you to work with while they are distracted by the new toy.

Do you do all of your writing on the computer or a word processor? If so then I challenge you to try doing some writing on an old fashioned legal pad or in a notebook, using a pen or pencil.
No typewriters, no PDAs, no digital pads that you can write on and it shows up in the compute. A old fashioned pad and pencil.
Give your muses a half hour to an hour of this and see what they do with the change in medium.

Okay, a writing exercise for you to try out some time. Sit at a desk or table with a pen and paper and write by the light of a kerosene lamp, or several candles. Make sure that you take care, and be sure that you do not leave either unattended. I think you'll find interesting results. I know that for me the muses like it and are more prolific when I write by candlelight - must be an atmospheric thing.
