The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) has delisted several ad unit sizes, including both the full banner (468x60) and half banner (234x60).
The delisting is part of a trend by advertisers toward ad types that more effectively communicate their brands in the ways they want them displayed.
Criteria used by the IAB in selecting the new ad types includes how effectively the ad format allowed for the advertiser's brand to be displayed, how positively the user was impacted by the ad format, how well the ad format fit with page formats, and how easily the format could be adopted by publishers for use on their web pages.
The trend for online ad formats seems to be moving toward leaderboards (728x90), and rectangular ad units. Even half page ads that run 300x600 and take up one entire side of a web page.
What does this mean for the writer? It is all about those looking to promote their books or writing skills. Suppose you are looking to launch a marketing campaign for your new book. You have a better chance for targeting the sites you want to target if you make sure that you are creating the right ad formats and not an outdated format. Most people creating an advertising campaign would likely start with a full banner ad size, which is no longer a preferred size.

You know you want to know how to market your novel, right? Well, here is the column to help you get that done. Each week in Marketing I will take a look at the world of marketing and see what I can find that seems to be hot and what's working. I'll also report any flubs that should have been better thought out (like that whole cartoon network bomb scare with Lite-Brites... you remember that one, right? Guess that's a case of bad marketing proving any advertising is good advertising? We all remember it at least, right?
I DO NOT think it would be a good idea for anyone to scare the bejeezus out of the public to get attention, but marketing is a necessary part of getting your novel sold, so I'll look into ways to do that here each week.
From guerrilla marketing to self promotion and book signings, I hope to help those with books in print find ways to get those books sold.

Okay, so you have your novel published and it is ready to go, right? You've done all the guerrilla marketing you can think of and are looking for new ways to get that book sold. Right?
How about a sign for your car? Yup, that's right, a sign to stick on the side of your car to act as a rolling billboard for your book to help increase sales. Everyone is looking for something to read when they are stuck in traffic or at a stop light. Everyone looks at a sign on the side of a car to see what it says when they walk past it in a parking lot. Make your car work for you by getting a custom sign made for selling your book.
I just designed a Car Magnets sign at BuildASign.com that features a bear crossing a stream and has the title of a website of mine on it, and to get that in a magnetic 6"x24" bumper sticker would be under $25. (Cheaper if I ordered more than one to give out or have spares in case the first was damaged.) Imagine the possibilities of a full color sign for the side or back of your car that displayed a image of the cover of your book, your book's title, your name, where to buy the book... anything you desire to have included on it fully customizable. Check out BuildASign at the link above, I think you'll like what you find.
